After visited his university, we came to Jagalchi Sijang - the largest fish market in Korea located along the Nampo Port. Daily there are more than 300 kinds of fish and shellfish are trade here at Jagalchi. Jagalchi Sijang has indoor and outdoor market. The outdoor traditional fish market spread along the pier. While this 6-storey modern building situated in the center of Jagalchi Fish Market has indoor seafood market and restaurants inside. The indoor market ground floor is like an live aquarium. Most of the fishes and sea creature are keeping alive before beheaded or being handle into delicious meal. You can pick your preferred seafood and ask the food kiosk to make it into sashimi for you. Or head up to restaurants at the levels above for Korean seafood cuisine such as seafood stew, steam crab, raw octopus etc.
Behind the building is the pier with busy Nampo port view. Young-do where Taejeongdae located as well as the old bridge Youngdo-daekyo and new bridge - Busan daekyo that linked Jung-gu (mainland) to Youngdo (island) can be see from the pier as well. The wind from the pier is so chilly! We couldn't stay long, and further walk to the outdoor traditional market.
This wholesale area next to the dock where freshly catch fishes are selling in bulks in wholesale price are filled with buyers and seller - a lots of bargain going on and it is interesting to watch it. Majority of those who work at the dock are men including the sellers. While the seafood stalls along the roadside are running by eldery women who were called "Jagalchi Ahjumma".
The market is really an interesting place to visit, so many kinds of fishes and sea life that I know or do not know it's name are selling here. Since we are in Nampo-dong, we also visit BIFF Square which is just opposite of Jagalchi Sijang - which will be next post.
