My post covid lockdown food hunt now expanded to Indian food~ to be exact it's banana leaf that I am craving for. Head to Brickfields for banana leaf dinner at this Vishal Food & Catering specialize in Chettinad cuisine - Southern Indian cuisine. At the same time their signboard also indicated North Indian cuisine, so my guess is both northern and southern cuisine are serve here. The banana leaf meal comes with 3 veggies options - I chose the bean sprouts tofu, cumin potatoes, and dhal spinach. Also order additional Mutton Parattal, deep fried bitter gourd and papadam to share. Meanwhile my friend who wanted something light for dinner go for Thosai with 2 types of chutney. Despite feeling a bit stuffy and hot inside the restaurant that house in a old heritage building, our dining experience was good.
The staffs here seems to be mistaken I am foreigner, showing interest by asking me where I'm from and even tell me the sides on banana leaf could be spicy haha! After meal, we found out that today is Pongal (Hindu harvest festival). Now we know why the street is so crowded. Indians in family or groups gather in front of the Hindu temples after prayers. When we walk pass one of the Hindu temple in front of Vishal Food to where we park our car, a friendly temple care taker inviting us to come in and have a brief visit of the temple. He even introduce and told story of all the Hindu Goddness / deity in the temple. What a great experience, we are so lucky tonight~
